Slumdog Millionaire

'Slumdog' evening? Oscar fave enters home stretch
The young stars of "Slumdog Millionaire" were greeted with cheers and blew kisses in return as they walked the red carpet into Sunday's Academy Awards, where the rags-to-riches story was a surefire favorite.

"It's unbelievable," said Ashutosh Lobo Gajiwala, 15. "We never thought we'd be here but we are."

In keeping with its theme of bottomless optimism amid adversity, "Slumdog Millionaire" has led a charmed life, dodging a flirtation with straight-to-DVD, winning over critics and climbing toward $100 million hit status. The film has won top honors at all key earlier awards ceremonies, with one to go.

Now its cast of unknowns — from new celebrities Dev Patel and Freida Pinto to kids plucked by director Danny Boyle from the slums of Mumbai, India — have taken a trip to Hollywood's glitziest party.

"It's a non-traditional film and depicts the differences between the haves and the have-nots," said Kristine Bednarz, 38, of San Diego, who had a coveted seat among enthusiastic fans in bleachers outside the Kodak Theatre.

"I hope they win. I'm sold! Well done kids," fan Eli Berg, 23, of Los Angeles, exclaimed in the bleachers after six of the film's young actors arrived.

Shot in India on a modest budget of $14 million, "Slumdog Millionaire" traces the life of a Mumbai orphan who overcomes poverty, betrayal, police torture and other hardships on his way to a reunion with his childhood love and success on India's version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire."

The film nearly got lost in the shuffle as Warner Bros. folded its arthouse banner, Warner Independent, which had been slated to distribute "Slumdog Millionaire." It was rescued from the direct-to-video scrap heap when Fox Searchlight stepped in to release the film.

It wasn't all sunshine for "Slumdog Millionaire" going into the Oscars, though. A few raindrops fell on the red carpet at midmorning amid forecasts of a 30 percent chance of showers on Hollywood's big night. And hope of warm feelings between the Screen Actors Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers was lost late Saturday night when SAG's board of directors rejected the producers' "last, best and final offer" for a new contract.

Chris Brown Investigation

As bad as the last week has been, Chris Brown may not have even seen the half of it.
At the request of the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office, the R&B star is being investigated for a variety of felonies, including domestic violence, assault resulting in great bodily injury and—based on specific allegations made by Rihanna—even attempted murder, a source close to the L.A. Police Department's investigation tells E! News.

But as they build their case, the source says, prosecutors fear that making any serious felony charges stick could prove difficult in a case where there are no direct witnesses other than Rihanna and Brown.

Brown is accused of beating his longtime girlfriend in the early morning hours of Feb. 8, causing them both to cancel their scheduled Grammy performances that night.

Rihanna told police that, while the two were fighting in his rented Lamborghini, Brown said to her, "I'm going to kill you," while his hands were around her neck. The Barbados-born songstress, who is reportedly cooperating with the cops' investigation, also told authorities that Brown choked her until she lost consciousness.

Brown was booked by police on suspicion of making criminal threats, but the D.A.'s office wanted further investigation into the incident before it decided on pressing charges.

The 19-year-old singer has been free on $50,000 bail and is currently back home with his family in Virginia.

"Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired," Brown, 19, said over the weekend via his rep in his first public statement since his arrest. "I am seeking the counseling of my pastor, my mother and other loved ones and I am committed, with God's help, to emerging a better person."

Rihanna, 20, was treated after the incident at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and was discharged the following night. After canceling her upcoming public appearances, she spent last week with her family in Babardos before departing for parts unknown.

Best Presidents by Historians

Just days after the nation honored the 200th anniversary of his birth, 65 historians ranked Abraham Lincoln as the nation's best president.

Former President George W. Bush, who left office last month, was ranked 36th out of the 42 men who had been chief executive by the end of 2008, according to a survey conducted by the cable channel C-SPAN.

Bush scored lowest in international relations, where he was ranked 41st, and in economic management, where he was ranked 40th. His highest ranking, 24th, was in the category of pursuing equal justice for all. He was ranked 25th in crisis leadership and vision and agenda setting.

In contrast, Lincoln was ranked in the top three in each of the 10 categories evaluated by participants.

In C-SPAN's only other ranking of presidents, in 2000, former President Bill Clinton jumped six spots from No. 21 to 15. Other recent presidents moved positions as well: Ronald Reagan advanced from No. 11 to 10, George H.W. Bush rose from No. 20 to 18 and Jimmy Carter fell from No. 22 to 25.

This movement illustrates that presidential reputations are influenced by present-day concerns, said survey adviser and participant Edna Medford.

"Today's concerns shape our views of the past, be it in the area of foreign policy, managing the economy or human rights," Medford said in a statement.

After Lincoln, the academics rated George Washington, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt and Harry Truman as the best leaders overall. The same five received top spots in the 2000 survey, although Washington and Franklin D. Roosevelt swapped spots this year.

Rated worst overall were James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, Franklin Pierce, William Henry Harrison and Warren G. Harding.

The survey was conducted in December and January. Participants ranked each president on a scale of one, "not effective" to 10, "very effective," on a list of 10 leadership qualities including relations with Congress, public persuasion and moral authority.

Russian Girl is an African Princess

It's like a Fairytale for Anya.

It’s the stuff of fairytales and fantasies. Shakespeare dabbled with it too. An abandoned orphan girl discovers she’s a princess after all. But for one girl from a remote Russian village, fact became stranger than fiction.

The everyday routine of 16-year-old Anya Bazanova in the village of Kon-Kolodez near the Ukrainian border does not differ much from that of other villagers: taking care of domestic animals, doing garden work. It’s only that dark-skinned and curly-haired Anya does not look very much like her neighbours. Now it’s turned out she is not a mere mortal but has Royal blood running in her veins.

Life hasn’t been a bed of roses for the girl. Born to a Russian mother and African father, she was abandoned by both when she was six months old. Her father, a prince from Guinea-Bissau in western Africa, returned to his homeland and her mother fell mentally ill.

Her father recently got in contact and now says he wants Anya to come and live with him when she turns 18.

“I’d like to go there. I think I’ll develop my career and he will help me in it. I can get my education there,” she said.

But it’s a tough decision and one which doesn’t just affect Anya. Irina Yakovleva was a good friend of Anya’s mother and has been looking after her since she was a baby. Although she admits it’ll be hard to watch Anya fly the nest, she knows her father can offer her a better future.

“I met him before when he was studying here, but I haven’t seen him for 15 years. Things have changed. He looks like a presentable man now. And I think I can trust him to look after her,” Irina said.

Anya says she’ll be sad to say goodbye to her Russian life. But with the help of her friends and some native fashion, she’s already getting ready for her transformation. She’ll soon not only look the part but also be playing the part of a real African princess.

Freestyle Motocross Rider Jeremy Lusk Dies

Jeremy Lusk, an American freestyle motocross rider, died of head injuries Tuesday after crashing while trying to land a backflip in competition. He was 24.

Jorge Ramirez, chief of the intensive care unit at Calderon Hospital where Lusk was taken, said the motocross racer suffered severe brain damage and a possible spinal cord injury.

Lusk won a gold medal at the 2008 X Games. He was injured Saturday night when he failed to complete a full rotation while attempting a Hart Attack backflip and slammed headfirst into the dirt. Lusk crashed in almost identical fashion in the freestyle semifinals at the 2007 X Games but was not hurt.

He had a successful 2008 season, winning Freestyle gold at the X Games and silver in Best Trick when he landed the first double-grab Hart Attack backflip. He won a bronze helmet in Freestyle at the Moto X World Championships in his hometown of San Diego.

Ramirez said Lusk died with his parents and his wife, Lauren, at his side.

“He was in a medicine-induced coma as a protective measure, and the medicine was being reduced to see how his body responded,” he said. “That didn’t mean he was going to wake up. He was in shock and that got worse last night, until he stopped responding and entered into cardiac and respiratory failure.”

Lusk lived in Temecula, Calif.

Miley Cyrus Apologizes for Controversial Photos

Miley Cyrus is finally speaking out on controversial photos that show her using her fingers to make her eyes slant, which is considered degrading to Asian people.

"I've also been told there are some people upset about some pictures taken of me with friends making goofy faces! Well, I'm sorry if those people looked at those pics and took them wrong and out of context!" she writes on her official fansite.

"In NO way was I making fun of any ethnicity! I was simply making a goofy face. When did that become newsworthy?" she adds. "It seems someone is trying to make something out of nothing to me. If that would of [sic] been anyone else, it would of been overlooked! I definitely feel like the press is trying to make me out as the new 'BAD GIRL'!"

Cyrus continues: "I feel like now that Britney is back on top of her game again, they need someone to pick on! Lucky me! haha Anyway, I just wanted to let you guys know what is on my heart. You guys know me and have been by my side every step of the way!

"You guys know my heart and know the most important things to me are my friends, family, fans, and GOD! In NO WAY do I want to disappoint any of you! But, when I have made mistakes in the past, I feel like I've owned up to them and apologized," she adds.

"I really wish everyone would stop focusing on my personal life and get back to focusing on what I love! Music and Acting! Hopefully, I will be touring again this fall! Yayy! =] It will be a nice change to be back out on the road again!" Cyrus goes on, before signing off "bexoxo blessings...Miley =)"

Advocate group OCA released a statement earlier saying the 16 year old "encouraged and legitimized the taunting and mocking of people of Asian descent, [and] she has also insulted her many Asian Pacific American fans."

This isn't the first time Cyrus has been slammed for photos.

In April 2008, she was criticized by parenting groups after pictures surfaced of her posing in green bra. A few months later, she apologized after posing semi-nude in Vanity Fair.

Seven Secrets About Disneyland

The drawbridge to Sleeping Beauty’s Castle really works. It’s been raised only twice: once on opening day, and once in the l980s when Fantasyland reopened.

The crest above the drawbridge is the Disney family crest.

It took only 364 days to build Disneyland.

Main Street represents Walt’s home town, Marceline, Missouri, in 1901, the year he was born.

The organ that was in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea now lives in the ballroom of the Haunted Mansion.

In the early years of the park, the Rivers of America were stocked with catfish and visitors were allowed to fish off the docks of Tom Sawyer Island.

When Disneyland launched its original Submarine Voyage ride, it included Weeki Wachee-type mermaids swimming among the submarines.

Micheal Phelps acknowledge Pot Pipe photos

Tabloid Stirs The Pot With Michael Phelps

HEARD THIS ONE?

Phelps' victory lap leaves trail of smoke

At least Michael Phelps wasn't doing anything involving Nazis and hookers. Not much consolation at this point, though.

Sunday, the 14-time Olympic gold medalist acknowledged he was indeed the person pictured in the British tabloid News of the World, apparently smoking marijuana through a bong. He thus becomes another celebrity embarrassed by the rag, a list that includes auto-racing titan Max Mosley (the aforementioned Nazis/hookers scandal), Prince Harry (teenage partying).

"I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment," Phelps said in a statement released to the Associated Press by one of his agents. "I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

The tabloid says the picture was taken in November at the University of South Carolina, where Phelps had gone to visit a girlfriend. It included lurid descriptions of his partying abilities; not all that surprising from a Rupert Murdoch-owned paper whose Web site includes a boast that it pays the most for juicy stories. According to the tabloid, Phelps' people offered bribes to keep the photo out of circulation, including having Phelps write an exclusive weekly column leading up to the London Games.

Now that would have been scandalous. The man who can barely carry a three-minute interview has to come up with three years' worth of ideas?

Naturally, the report exaggerated wildly by suggesting the photo could prompt a suspension from the 2012 Olympics. The World Anti-Doping Agency, USA Swimming and the U.S. Olympic Committee all dismissed that idea.

But the aftermath of '12 will be fun. Remember, after winning six golds in 2004, he got busted for DUI as a 19-year-old.
