Chinese Workers Smoke To Boost Economy

Chinese state employees have reportedly been told to smoke nearly a quarter million packs of cigarettes a year—to boost the economy.
Officials in central China’s Hubei province has ordered its staff — including teachers – to puff their way through 230,000 packs of locally made cigarettes, the Daily Telegraph reported on Monday.

And if they fail to meet the target, or are caught smoking cigarette brands produced from neighboring provinces, the employees could face fines, the British newspaper said.

Officials said the edict is aimed at increasing the province’s tax revenues and protecting local cigarette manufacturers from outside competition.

“The regulation will boost the local economy via the cigarette tax,” said Chen Nianzu, a member of the Gong’an cigarette market supervision team.

A local newspaper reported members of a “special task force” raided a local middle school and found three “non-compliant” cigarette butts. The school was not fined, but a teacher said it was subjected to “public criticism” for “undisciplined practices.”

Some 350 million Chinese currently smoke, with around a million dying from smoking-related diseases every year.

Baby Born With Extra Foot

Baby Born With Extra Foot ... in Brain

Surgery to remove a brain tumor from a 3-day-old Colorado boy turned up something “borderline unheard-of,” his doctors say: a foot. When the pediatric neurosurgeon operated Oct. 3 on Sam Esquibel, he saw a small foot, other half-formed appendages, and even intestines in the baby’s head, reports the Colorado Springs Gazette. All were removed, and Sam is back home and doing fine.

You show those pictures to the most experienced pediatric neurosurgeons in the world, and they've never seen anything like it.
- Dr. Paul Grabb, pediatric neurosurgeon
"It looked like the breach delivery of a baby—coming out of the brain," says the surgeon. Doctors speculate that it may have been a rare form of teratoma, a congenital brain tumor that takes the form of body tissue. It also could have been a case of fetus in fetu, in which a fetus grows inside its twin—but that usually occurs in the torso, not the head.

Increase Brain Power

There are specific strategies that you can use to increase brain power.

One of the best ways you can increase brain power is to give your brain some rest. Sleep is crucial to brain function and if you want to maximize your mind’s potential you need to let it have some down time. Many people believe that your dreams help your mind to sort out information.

Concentration will be more difficult and you may even let your emotions override your logical thought if you are sleep-deprived. When your mind has a chance to rest you increase brain power automatically.

Another simple strategy to increase brain power is to exercise. Your mind need oxygen and getting a brisk walk or a good aerobic work out will help your brain get the oxygen that it needs to function at its fullest capacity.

Clear your mind every once in awhile. Sometimes we need to work with our subconscious minds in order to increase brain power. Basically, you increase brain function by interacting with your own thoughts.

You can increase brain power by exposing yourself to physical stimulus like this.

New sights, sounds and sensations will stimulate your mind. Simply experiencing new things will help you increase brain power as well.

The caffeine in the popular drink can increase brain power because it stimulates the mind.

Blinded by BEAUTY

It's an axiom of evolutionary psychology that beautiful people are healthier too. New evidence suggests that that's a lovely fiction. In fact, beauty may actually blind us to the real state of physical health.

S. Michael Kalick, Ph.D., of the University of Massachusetts, set out to look for truth in beauty. He asked 32 judges to rate the attractiveness of 333 faces by photograph. Then he compared the ratings with the actual, indisputable health records of the people pictured. Kalick found that the ones judged attractive were no healthier than their homelier peers. Kalick then had a second group look at the photographs, this time to indicate which people they thought were physically healthy. The raters' guesses were surprisingly accurate--except when the face was especially good-looking or especially ugly.

Attractive faces were almost always labeled healthy, while unattractive ones were usually thought to be unhealthy. This was so, even when there seemed to be other, more trustworthy cues to the contrary

Though Kalick isn't sure how they do it, it seems that people do know how to judge health from appearance--but they ignore this knowledge when presented with faces that fall at either extreme of attractiveness.

Biologically justified or not, beauty will remain important in picking a mate.
